The bodies of the SMLA are the general meeting and the board. The SMLA is working exclusively in the militia system, i.e. all involved members and board members work without reimbursement and compensation.

To carry out its tasks the SMLA is organized in working groups. These working groups correspond thematically (mostly) with the working groups of the CMI. The SMLA working groups organize on national level the preparation, the Swiss-wide consultation and the drafting of the replies to the Questionnaires of the CMI. The SMLA working groups are also responsible for the delegations at the yearly annual meetings of the CMI as well as the delegations in the CMI working groups.

The coordination of these tasks is assigned to the board, in particular to the president.
